HINDUSTAN ZINC LIMITED – HOUSING + HOSTEL, DARIBA
The project includes a staff quarters building and a girls’ hostel building which are parts of the Hindustan Zinc Limited township in Dariba, Rajasthan.
The two blocks, located in close proximity to each other, have been designed keeping the same language in mind. The elevations of these buildings are defined by framed windows and balconies. These frames also act as slabs and overhangs for balconies and repeat in a rhythmic pattern on alternating floors. These features provide a sense of identity and legibility to the blocks which are located in an area which is otherwise largely industrial.
The design has been carried out keeping the daylighting and wind flow in mind. The central circulation, which contains the public spaces of the building is provided with ample openings and punctures. The residents of the building have a strong sense of community in their lifestyles and in keeping with that, the design is such that it encourages community engagement.
