The Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, was working on a proposal for integrating solar roof panels on the existing and new DMRC stations. The exercise was carried out to present the extensive opportunities available to DMRC for generation of clean energy from the abundant urban spaces at its disposal in the form of roof spaces on stations, yards, parking lots and other properties.

GIZ invited Adreesh Chakraborty to help them integrate their
proposal to the architectural and structural systems used at the various
structures made by DMRC.

An estimated 52 MW of generating capacity
could be installed if all the present stations, future stations and other
ancillary areas under DMRC could be utilized.

The design intervention lay primarily in
transforming a purely engineered over-layer of photovoltaic panels to an urban
image that would not only enhance the visual experience of the industrial
curved roofs of the stations, but would also become an icon for DMRC to
propagate itself as a responsible and conscious service provider with an eye
for urban aesthetics. The panels were designed to breathe in life to the
dormant form of the roofing structure as a manifestation of the function of
being live and producing electricity as long as the sun shines on them.

The challenge lay in designing a light,
cheap, effective, construction friendly and highly flexible structural system
that could plug onto existing stations without having to ever stop operations
and would also help the solar panels face the sun from any possible alignment.
A light structural system was developed that could be clamped onto the existing
metal portal frames where they were exposed and keep the existing roofing free
from any intervention, thus reducing chances of leakages and ensuring smooth functioning
of the stations.

For a case study of an existing station
was taken up. After analysis of the best
annual exposure to the sun and the alignments of the station the over layer was
conceptualized for optimum performance.

The new stations were proposed with
panels incorporated into the roofing structure to form a transparent roof
shaded by the array of the Photovoltaic cells. This in turn would also increase
day-lighting at the stations.

DESCRIPTION: Designed
for a joint family, this set of three villas takes on a distinct language of a
crossover between traditional architecture that responds to its climatic
context with contemporary design.

The inspiration for
the villa design comes from traditional Indian planning with an open courtyard
at the centre with rooms arranged around it. This courtyard transforms itself
into spaces with different characteristics for the three houses, but all of
these become the central congregational space for each household.

The site planning
allows for each house to have its own open space, surrounding it with common tree
courts and allowing for members of the different households to freely access
each other’s homes without being restricted by the formal entries.

The site for this competition entry was the Worli Koliwada in Mumbai, where we proposed a mixed-use development, with shared facilities, integrated amenities and spaces for future development, given the nature and population of the Koliwada. The residences were placed along the waterfront, keeping the character of the fishing town intact, while the commercial hub and central public space were planned around the historic fort. The hotel and towers have been oriented to maximize cross ventilation and views of the sea.

This site is located at a very busy intersection overlooking a highly eventful marketplace. The design has been done delicately to address to this rich contextuality, visually opening up the corner at the intersection by functionally introducing an open garden. This garden has been made catering to the users’ privacy with an iconic curved wall hugging it from one side and a wall of green and the boundary creating an island of green between the busy street intersection and the house.

This residence has ingeniously broken away from the linear box typology dominating the surrounding context by introducing a trapezoidal block . This acts like a surprise in an otherwise preconceived built form derived from the byelaws, asserting a dynamically bold statement on this urban corner. The design stands out with its overhead louvers embracing the whole house, acting as a shading screen on the roof and outer walls.

With its ground floor reserved for public functions the open spaces are designed such that when in use they can be opened up or closed as desired. Large openings have been introduced onto the facade without compromising on the privacy of the residents.

The proposal looks at a near future where the concerns of urbanization in a country like India are being met through a system based on three fundamentals: food independence, reducing the cost of home ownership and Independence from land value of cities. The total arable land in India amounts to about 1.5 acres of land available for every family to farm and live on, which in turn forms the basis of this model, represented through a site on the outskirts of New Delhi. The home revolves around the idea of structurally flexible and energy efficient modular units, which enable construction to be less labour intensive. This is achieved through aperiodic tiling of triangular panels around a pile using geometric patterns that allow for repetition. The pile and the panels together develop units that can be plugged in at a later stage too. Subsistence farming is also a major part of the proposal which facilitates independence from the cycle of food procurement in cities. Combined with a peer to peer rental marketplace, this model creates a compelling social and spatial scenario, urging residents to adopt this system as a lifestyle, and reducing the ever increasing pressure on cities.

Designed for a family of 4, this farmhouse was conceived on a concept of pure straight lines intersecting to create plains, punctured to get openings thus generating a pleasantly intriguing visual assembly.
This ensemble of sculpted plains tucks itself into the designed landscape rather impressively. There is a burst of fresh colors with the water body and flower beds resting on the podium, soothingly lit with strip lighting, to create a picturesque scene. Also, the external façade is punctured with jaali patterns which are exaggerated with beautiful warm yellow lighting from underneath.
The design of this farmhouse is driven by solar passive architecture thus reducing the overall energy consumption by manifolds. Natural day lighting has been given supreme importance in this design with orientation specific facade treatment.
The northern facade has been kept fully glazed to allow penetration of northern diffused light while proper screening in the form of jaalis, deep recess shading and cantilevers has been done on the west and south facades. Attention has been paid to minute details, which can eventually make a major difference, like sunshades, which have been designed such that they cut the excruciating summer sun but welcome warm winter sun.
The design skillfully integrates all the water functions in the farmhouse into one water body thus reducing the overall consumption of water by creating an artificial water pond-cum- swimming pool-cum-jacuzzi. Energy consumption is also reduced by the use of biogas for all heat related supplies.

DESCRIPTION: Designed for a joint family, this set of three villas takes on a distinct language of a crossover between traditional architecture that responds to its climatic context with contemporary design.

The inspiration for the villa design comes from traditional Indian planning with an open courtyard at the center with rooms arranged around it. This courtyard transforms itself into spaces with different characteristics for the three houses, but all of these become the central congregational space for each household.
The site planning allows for each house to have its own open space, surrounding it with common tree courts and allowing for members of the different households to freely access each other’s homes without being restricted by the formal entries.

Twin villas are located on a prime site that overlooks the Zuari River on one side and the Hyatt hotel with hills as a backdrop on the other. The design of the villas uses these picturesque surroundings and has been designed with a literal ‘twist’ so as to maximize views from all sides.

Each floor is twisted over the next primarily to align the various zones to visual sightlines taking into consideration surrounding built forms and contours. This in turn creates interesting private terraces on each level.

The design also uses this location to an advantage, allowing predominant winds into the courtyard, which begins to act like a wind tunnel.

Taking cues from the location and context of Goa, the hardscaping has been conceived as a middle-ground -a common space for the houses, the geometry of the twisting grids, for modernity and tradition and for water and stone to flow harmoniously throughout the site.

The contours of the site together with the scope of the panoramic views create a perfect opportunity for a bold design.
